The Connection Between Diabetes and Suburban Sprawl

Summary of the Clip

Diabetes cases have doubled over the last ten years. Diabetes costs two percent of the GDP. One of the significant risk factor affecting Americans is obesity. Diabetes reduces the lifespan of individuals and their quality of life. Footcare is vital for people with diabetes. One technique used is hyperbaric foot therapy. Amputations and vision loss are caused by diabetes. Surbubiann sprawling has led to the growth of towns and cities. People are now more dependent on the usage of cars for transport hence resulting in less exercising. This increases the risk of people developing chronic diseases. The government should invest in managing diabetes.

Public Health Issues

There are two disciplines which are related to the information provided in the video. These are epidemiology and health policy and management. Epidemiology involves the study of disease patterns. The video tries to how health is an aspect of social, emotional, psychological, physical and spiritual aspects of a being. Through the video, the suburbian sprawling has led to people interacting less and spending most of the time indoors and also on social media platforms. These have resulted in many people being stressed and some developing suicidal tendencies due to depression. Moreover, government policies have not been implanted to ensure that chronic disease is being managed as expected. The governments are focusing more on industrial and commercial development rather than development in the health sector. More research should be put into diabetes. More funding should be set aside for buying of diabetic drugs and diagnostic equipment. Moreover, training programs should be well funded to ensure the continued training of diabetes specialists.

The information provided by the video is accurate and easy to comprehend. Most of the chronic diseases that humans face are due to lifestyle practices. Most people are unfit and do not take part in exercises. Some people rarely walk regardless of the short distances to their destinations since they are used to using their cars. If governments and individuals focused on health issues with the same zeal they focus on buildings and commercialization of urban areas, then many diseases will be well managed.

Public health is characterized based on the community where individuals come from. The measurement of public health incorporates costs, mortality and morbidity. Most of the individuals living in urban areas depend on fast foods and vehicles for transport hence increasing the chances of developing chronic conditions. Those residing in median class or low-class areas often have bicycles which they use as a means of transportation. This aids them in being fit. Away from the urban centres, people have time to mingle, share ideas, and share their problems with individuals. This also aids in the promotion of psychological health. Modernization has led to an increase in industries which emit poisonous gases into the atmosphere. Also, harmful chemicals are being released by industries into the water supply poisoning many people gradually and even killing aquatic animals. Recreation areas are being reduced since new apartments and business are being established in such areas; thus exercising is being ignored. Most urban regions require people to have cars to ease the movement. Constant driving prevents one from interacting with friends and exercising, increasing the likelihood of developing diseases.

Though the video was educated, I feel that certain details were left out. First, the explanation of the various type of diabetes. Moreover, the other complications of diabetes apart from diabetic feet and visual loss should be highlighted to illustrate the severity of the disease.
