The Custer massacre
The Custer massacre resulted in the death of many people, among them Custer and his men. According to the editorial piece, Byer blamed the death of Custer and his men on the sleek and the smooth-talking Quaker advocates of the peace policy, who were ardent advocates of the peace policy. Byer noted that the Indians could have probably caused the death of Custer. The Quaker advocates referred to the Indians as the elder brother who had the rights of succession, just like a firstborn. In the article, Byer insisted that if the issue of the Indians had been resolved in time, Custer would not have been killed.
Byer’s fear of the Massacre harming the “new west” emanates from the wrongful act of preventing the increase in the population and the capital. Tactics on the prevention of population and capital growth entailed the enabling of the held perceptions abroad that the settlements necessitated the experienced attacks. Byer observed that Custer’s death shocked the population and the capital in the new west. The author highlighted the inability to reverse the damage done on the region, not unless there was the total elimination of the Sioux.
Byer’s editorial piece depicts the attitude of the Westerners towards the Sioux. The only solution to the fear of the Westerners is the total elimination of the Sioux. The inability to take such measures will make it difficult to prove Denver’s safety like the other regions in the United States such as New York. The article outlined the great capital as a coward that would not day advance to the region seized by the Sioux. The westerners viewed the Sioux as very dangerous and required the adoption of the necessary measures that would prevent a repeat of a similar occurrence.
Byer outlined the fear of the Indians as pushing capitals and populations away from the region. The required measures entail the total elimination of the tribes portraying hostility, among them the Indians. Byer would disagree on Hunt Jackson’s notion as depicted in the article A Century of Dishonor. Hunt Jackson seemed to justify the Indian’s hostility by observing that the Indians’ action emanated from the actions of the Native Americans’ governments. According to Hunt, the Indians were used to being unable to enjoy the fruit of their labor, which was taken away from them by the Westerners.
The Impact of Mechanization (1889)
According to David Wells, the drastic changes taking place were the rapid organization of the combinations of capitals to facilitate the industrial and commercial activities on a scale that has not been experienced before. These activities consolidate to form something that is not only complex but which the members of the public have never experienced before in the form of the corporations that bear impressive names such as the syndicates or trusts. The combinations have some of the most outstanding features than the modern business methods have ever experienced. The drastic changes also entail the economic developments tendencies that minimize the area which feels the impact of competition effectiveness.
The changes in question result in a total revolution in that they affect the great association of capital. As such, there has been a need for a mastermind to manage the capital. Some of the men’s attributes supposed to manage the changes in the capital are that they should exhibit competence to use and direct other men. The man managing the change in capital should also be able to note and profit from in production methods and the changes in prices. Wells highlighted such a man as being a general of the industry, with the held position correlating with that of the army general.
The common man can be a major boost to the retail industry. Through a good organization, the clerks, shop men, and distributors can aid in the selling of amounts of goods and incurring less than they could do when selling small amounts of goods. On the other hand, individuals purchasing large quantities can accord their customers a benefit of favorable process and a range of selected products without interfering with their profit levels. The common man is being bypassed by the overly organized establishments that sell little over the wholesale prices while offering convenience.
American people’s response to the new methods of doing business should involve detachment from the old ways of doing business and the adoption of new tactics as complemented by the new change. Americans may consider a change in occupation while obtaining new skills to facilitate their presence in the newly formed business environment. Relatively, the retail industry should form a new organization that aligns with the needs of the customers. Also, the changes adopted by the Americans should gear towards supplementing income while ensuring sustainable business operations.
A White Southern Perspective on Reconstruction (1868)
Howell Cobb opposed the reconstruction policies due to the pain and suffering emanating from their implementation. The people of the South were left in ruins, impoverished, and having to bear the heavy-weight of their burdens. The Southerners were languishing in poverty and lacked the power to fight the wrongs and injustices they faced. All types of properties had been taken from the Southerners either by seizure of purchases. However, when querying on the remuneration for the purchased properties, the received response was that the rebels’ claims received no recognition from the government. Cobb highlighted the burden placed on the people by the taxation system at the time of their utmost suffering.
Howell Cobb seemed to oppose the policy of placing life, liberty, and property under the absolute military people. Due to this policy, people are denied the protection provided by the laws and state constitutions. Due to the violation of their faith and constitutional rights, the people protested. The move was termed as rude and lack of respect. Restlessness due to being oppressed and under the wrong has been depicted as a sign of rebellion. The aftermath was more restrictions on civil and Constitutional rights. Due to the policy, the people of the South have had to deal with a damaged state government and a dysfunctional arm of the industry. Also, there has been the development of bitter antagonism of the Negro population against the white population. A kind and friendly interaction between the Negroes and the whites were in the interests of the two races.
The southerners reacted to the reconstruction by appealing, with the leadership denoting the move as a form of insubordination that required additional burdens. The southerners have been denied protection by the state constitutions and laws while ensuring that liberty, laws, and the property at the disposal of the military power. The Southerners also protested the violation of their faith and Constitutional right, with the aftermath being the protests termed as disrespectful. The Southerners continued efforts resulted in additional restrictions on their civil and Constitutional rights.
MISSSING
Lynching in the South (1895)
The lynching in the South was used to send a strong message to the members of the black community. The blacks in the South would be lynched if they broke the Jim Crow laws, failed to adhere to the community standards, or even perhaps broke some race etiquette. The Jim Crow laws segregated the African-Americans, with the color lines enforced through violence and intimidation. The lynching incidents were undertaken publicly with the culmination being the victim being beaten or burned by a mob.
The reason for the murdering of the unoffending Negroes changed over time as they obtained the right to vote. The ability to vote was their invaluable proof of citizenship that gave the Negroes a voice to speak out in matters of national importance. Also, the Negroes’ vote became an important tool in the matters of national and state politics. However, the African-Americans’ right did not last long as the Southern Whites did not believe that the latter had any rights that needed to be respected by the white man. The thought necessitated the development of the republican form of government in the southern region.
Wells-Barnett proposed the end of lynching through the condemnation of the act, continuation of the anti-lynching crusades, and the publications of the editorials that spoke out against the acts. Wells-Barnett was the leader of the anti-lynching campaigns and came from a slave family. Nevertheless, she was able to own and publish a weekly newspaper that spoke out on the blacks’ lynching. Wells-Barnett efforts of ending lynching entailed speaking out and even making print pullouts highlighting the issue of public lynching. She continued her efforts regardless of the danger it would bring in her life, with the example of the threats of violence that prompted her to move to the North.
The document revealed the African-Americans as living in a state of violence and intimidation. The white man never viewed the African-Americans as deserving of any human treatment. As such, there were numerous incidents where African Americans would be publicly lynched and killed without any legal executions. Also, the white man in the south did not believe that the African-Americans needed to have rights that deserved to be respected by the whites. Despite the right to vote giving the African-Americans a voice, the government remained to be in possession of the Whites. The Negroes would not be allowed to dominate despite the numbers they had. The formulation of the southern government resulted in the elimination of all the African Americans from the state and national elections.
The Sinking of Maine
Maine’s disaster is an object lesson to the administration as opposed to a cause of war. If the inquiry denoted the disaster as emanating from the faulty construction of the vessel or a case of carelessness, there should be no reason for an attack on Spain. If the accident is a result of the act of the irresponsible individuals, the United States would seek amendments in and indemnity payments from Spain. Spain’s refusal to comply with United States’ requirements would result in war. On occasion the explosion would be as a result of Spain’s illegal involvement, there would be an instant declaration of war as an act of revenge.
The New York Journal gave adequate reasons necessitating their intervention in Cuba. The attacks orchestrated by Spain in Cuba have created warfare that has not only angered the humanity but also violated the laws of many civilized nations. The Spaniards have also destroyed the Americans’ properties with the same culprits arresting and killing the American citizens while also destroying the Americans’ property. United States’ navy has been forced to undertake police duties in regions that they see as being targets of the Spaniards’ prosecutions. The commerce between Cuba and the United States has been totally destroyed. Other acts seemed to discredit America’s sovereignty. Spain insulted the American flag and illegally fired the American vessel. The Spanish power over Cuba extends to the point of enabling the former’s official to interfere with Cuba’s troops.
The sinking of Maine moved the United States close to war with Spain. In so many instances, Spain showed disrespect to the United States and interfered with the business between Cuba and the United States. Spain had also murdered a lot of American Citizens, and the findings of the inquiry would denote the move to be taken by the United States on Spain. The Cuban revolution against Spain interfered with the United States’ operations in Spain while resulting in its citizen’s death. A declaration of Maine’s explosion as orchestrated by Spain would have brought the U.S close to war with Spain.
