The Meyers – Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
The Meyers – Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a self-appraisal tool that uses what one prefers to be able to develop a personality type (Park, 2013). From the 72-question quiz, my personality type is ESFJ. According to the MBTI, individuals with this personality type are usually very outgoing, organized in whatever they do kindhearted and very loyal. They like interacting with people making them friendly. Such individuals are good at encouraging people with challenges and always want the best for people surrounding them (Bayne, 1997). Individuals with this personality type must always seek approval before doing anything. They like being appreciated by others and are still very sensitive to the needs of other people. It is easy to hurt them through being unkind. Research has it that individuals with this personality type like to control the environment by planning and coming up with programs to help people. Such people always value their community, and they grow up to be very generous, and they tend to be self-centered and manipulative.
After conducting the personality type test, I was surprised by the fourth dimension, which is feelings that were rated at 28 percent. I have never thought that I have been controlling my feelings. I have always thought that I would help people because I think of the troubles they go through. The results indicate that I help people because of the feelings that I have from them. My feelings make me sensitive to their needs and that I always respond by caring for them. I am also surprised that I want to be liked by others, and I can easily be had in case of any disagreement. This has come to me as a surprise.
As an individual, I closely aligned with the first dimension; that is an extrovert, which is rated at 25%. In life, I like sharing ideas with friends and people around me; in most cases, I find myself giving whatever I have t friends and inviting people for celebrations and holidays. This has made me very popular in my community. Close friends and relatives say that I am kind, loyal, outgoing, organized, and find pleasure in helping people. Most of them claim that they can depend on me for anything. I hate being alone and feel better when I am with other people. This justifies why I am closely aligned with the dimension of being an extrovert. My main weakness is that I wouldn’t say I like criticism, especially in public. I feel embarrassed, and I think it should only happen in a private place. Those are characteristics of an introvert.
MBTI is a handy tool for individual use. This is because the personality tool enables one to understand himself and understand others leading to self-awareness (“Myers-Briggs type indicator (MBTI), multicultural applications,” n.d.). When someone understands himself, he or she can interact with other people leading to self-development. Self-awareness will also lead to creating a good relationship in workplaces, hence increasing workplace productivity. Individuals can understand themselves and look for ways to operate as individuals without hurting others and identifying their under-utilized ability. The tool also helps one to accept himself based on his strengths and weaknesses. The MBTI tool leads to self-awareness that enables one to avoid and look for ways of resolving conflicts. This will allow an individual to create and maintain relationships. When someone understands himself, he can develop his career based on his strengths. Finally, individuals can improve their communication skills to increase their emotional intelligence and eventually learn in the correct occupation.
Other than individuals, this tool is essential to organizations because, through information about individuals, organizations can work on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (Bayne, 1997). Such organizations can use the reports on personality traits when coming up with the teams since they are in a position to understand how such things will become effective and efficient. Such tools are also crucial because organizations can understand their employees and look for ways of improving communication at the workplace. This leads to fewer conflicts at work and more productivity, hence increasing their returns. Understanding the employees more will make it easy to motivate them since the management is in a position to understand the employees and know what to do to motivate them. Organizations will also look at the personality type data when looking for people to develop career ways.
In conclusion, The Meyers – Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment tool for personality traits is of great importance to individuals and organizations. It leads to self- awareness that enables one to understand himself and understand others. It also ensures that an individual realizes his strengths and weaknesses to improve his strengths to cover the shortcomings.
