The paradox of Gambling Conceit and Gambling Ruin
Gambling conceit is described as a state when a gambler believes that he or she will be able to come out of the risky behavior of gambling and yet the still find they are gambling. Gambling ruin expressed in varied forms but commonly use of the term is that a gambler who engages in a negative behavior of betting eventually loses and gets broke.
A capitalistic society is to blame for gambling conceit and gambling ruin. Today’s personal wealth, personal image and a person’s reputation are all defined by material wealth and worth. As a result we all think of a gig, a bet, a hustle and more importantly a gamble as a quick way to fix our wealth esteem. It’s ironical to say that a gambler may have a reasonable amount of money and still go into a casino to gamble the money with an aim to multiply it. In an attempt to make a quick buck the gambler sees a casino as an instant payout casino to multiply the money in a nick of time.
The addiction of the gambling conceit is more complex than its surface appearance. It may seem quite fallacious, ridiculous and unrealistic to bet ones money with a possible risk of losing all the money, but there is the other side of the coin that explains the complexity of this. There is that believe, at the back of the mind that one might win much money just by taking the risk.
Gambling conceit existence can be explained by the practicability and the reality of the winning chance. The fact that at times the gambler wins is not based on fantasy or magic but due to the fact it’s all about chance, luck or fate makes it possible for one to bet knowing well that it’s a risky behavior.
A previous lucky win best explains a gambling conceit tendency, this builds once confidence and an uncertain but limited guarantee that it’s possible to win again as one had previously won. Most gamblers have this one last try and then pull out from the gamble. Despite the fact the risk is always guarantee as the win each gambler hopes to be lucky one more time.
Gambling ruin can best be described as the ‘curse’ of a gambler. In societal measures and judgment gambling is perceived as a vice. For instance in film, a gambling character is more often and eventually portrayed as an extravagant and extremely gullible one whose downfall is always inevitable. Most people always believe that gambling always leads to addiction and financial ruin.
Gambling ruin is also perceived as a past time, fun and merry making. In a rather absurd state of events gamblers usually find fun in gambling often taking it as a socializing activity. In most platforms the city of Las Vegas, commonly known as the home of most casino is a fun city where one goes to blow-up money. With the phrase “whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. This phrase alludes to the freedom and the carefree lifestyle that one enjoys in the city of Las Vegas. Here in Vegas you can go and gamble all the money you have, you can do all that since no one at home will know.
Gambling ruin may also detrimental and hazardous as it may leave the gambler disillusioned, frustrated and depressed with a lot of regret. Almost all humans’ beings have had a situation of complete optimism and hope. Much frustration is always achieved from a high level of much expectation. This is what happens when one loses a gamble. At times one appears to be winning and is always sure of a win. What is now commonly referred as a –sure bet-only to lose in the last minute. The end result is a psychological frustration which is fatal in some instances due to suicide.
In as much as gambling is perceived negatively it has its own share of profitable merits. Gambling is profitable. There are many gamblers who win big gambles and make much income. The casino business thrives in profit from gambler’s losses. The casino is its self a gambler as its customers are either of the two walking home with the bet. Likewise gaming is a growing gamble business globally with multinational companies investing in this risky venture.
