The Power of Addiction and Addiction to Power
According to Mate, addiction is any behavior that gives one a temporary leave and temporary pleasure but has some negative consequences in the long term, and the individual can’t control it despite knowing the long term effects. Mate says that it is inherent for us to look at what is right about addiction. By this, he means that it is important to understand the reasons that make someone get addicted to whatever they are addicted to.
Mate relates an addiction he had on shopping for compact music to distract his mind. This was an addiction that affected various spheres of his life like his work; he didn’t do a delivery to a woman he was supposed to. It also affected his family since he had to lie to his wife several times and was not responsible for his children.
The development of the human brain is influenced by the kind of environment an individual interacts with. Some things like parental love, which is vital in the development of the human brain. Once such things are deprived, especially at an early age, they fail to develop in the brain, and the victim seeks to supplement it from outside through other things, which bring about addiction.
Early trauma impacts addiction in the sense that it makes one feel they lack something and put them in a position where they have to work towards attaining it and get addicted in the process. This is generational since, while trying to satisfy the missing thing, they pass the emptiness to their children who start the whole process again.
In my opinion, from the discussion of Mate in TedTalk, is a problem which ought to interpret from the victim’s point of view. It may not be the liking of the addict and may have been incorporated in their systems from birth. It is vital that these people be treated with an understanding of what their life has been.
