PART A (Case scenario) (20 marks)
Mike is a long distance athlete who competes at national level. He is training very hard to be ready for the next running competition that will take place in 4 weeks.
You as a trainer are working together with his regular coach to guide Mike through the competition preparation and to support him to implement effective nutritional strategies.
Mike’s information:
Age: 28 Height: 178 cm Weight: 80kg Activity level: Extremely active
You are required to approximately calculate (using the Harris-Benedict Formula) Mike’s nutritional requirements (daily calories intake) in order to satisfy his demanding physical activity regimen and to maintain his body weight.
Once you worked out Mike’s calorie needs, you then need to calculate how much of each macronutrient he should aim for. (Carbs, Proteins, Fats)
TASK
You are required to write a report to share with Mike and his General practitioner or Nutritionist (Allied Health Professional) that will help him to understand his nutritional requirements and what kind of strategies and practices need to be implemented and followed.
Information that you need to cover in the Written Report:
- Mike’s BMR in calories
- Mike’s Total Calories Requirements
- How much of each Macronutrient is needed to cover the Total requirements
- What strategies can you suggest to enhance peak performance
- What nutritional practices and principles can be followed to support athletes before, during and after competition
- You need to seek feedback from your athlete on your nutritional suggestions. Include in your report a brief questionnaire (no more than 5 questions) that helps you to evaluate that effectiveness of your strategies
- Explain what changes in nutritional strategies you would implement if the performance of Mike will decrease during competition
PART B (40 marks)

Ensure you speak clearly and have a good knowledge of your topic area. Tools you can use for your presentation are PowerPoint, laptop, projector and the whiteboard.
