The Psychology of Your Future Self
The concept of an individual’s self refers to the aspect of strategizing future opportunities, which may affect a person’s future. For example, an individual may attend college to raise the possibility of living a better life from increased income. The availability of information and analytics allows individuals to predict their future either by evaluating future success or failure. The information sources mainly occur in contemporary internet sources where a majority of people can access it. However, all the prospective evaluation and planning relies on the psychological wellness and capability of an individual.
Indeed, young people make decisions about how they desire to appear in the future. However, according to Gilbert (2014), the majority of the youth regret what they eventually become. I agree with Gilbert as I have witnessed several people who got married as a youth but later sought divorce during their adulthood days. Gilbert further highlights the influencers that make people choose future choices, which they later regret and, again, desire to change to a new identity. I concur with Gilbert that human beings’ misconceptions about time influence unpopular decisions. People fail to understand that life takes a downwards shift rather than an upward shift.
This information, as presented by Gilbert, illustrates the aspect of identity development as learned from the module. The modern understanding of identity change depicts that change mainly occurs in adulthood rather than in teenagerhood. The majority of individuals consider changing decisions during adulthood that they made during youth. During the adulthood change period, individuals undergo an identity crisis, which they work to solve through evaluating key areas such as love, work, and ideology (Emerging Adulthood). Individuals must take into consideration that the need to change remains constant while the environment and preferences experience variation over time.
