The role of a special education teacher is to coach children of different ages, promoting as well as managing their progress while taking into account of their special needs requirement. Children with cognitive, emotional or physical disabilities require specialized attention, and it is the onus of a special education teacher to design an accommodative curriculum. My ultimate goals in teaching children with special needs are to see to it that I nature and mentor them with zeal and passion and make their world the world of impossibilities as they are advancing their careers. I seek to become a global role model for the many students whom I mentor. Through the lessons and coaching sessions that I render to these kids, I purpose to be the bridge and stepping to stone their success so that they can reach their destinies and achieve their dreams. To achieve this goals and mission, I require refining my skills and expertise as a special education teacher. Some of the essential qualities to possess to become a certified special education teacher include communication skills, critical thinking skills, interpersonal skills, and patience. The merits of being a special education teacher include impacting the life of a child, the platform to change the world, becoming a role model, mentor, and icon to the child as well as the numerous job opportunities and growth in the career. On the other hand, some of the demerits of the special education profession include high burnout rate, lack of appreciation, lack of support from the government, inferiority complex, poor pay, lack of support from parents and tiresome. The special needs programs have indeed improved notably with the introduction of technological equipment and gadgets in helping the children with disabilities cope up with learning more efficiently. For example, the use of braille equipment for the visually impaired students or sign language and lip reading to students with hearing difficulties has helped me interact more creatively with the students with these disabilities. The future of special education teachers is indeed promising. Coordinating programs of elementary, middle, high school, public and private universities require a specialist educational teacher. With programs such as individualized education programs (IEPs), it is possible to customize lessons to suit the needs of the disabled youngsters.
