The woman should be referred to appropriate health care specialists who will assess her, diagnose, manage, and advise her accordingly.
The first referral for the woman is to an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, considering that the woman is 12 weeks pregnant, and she is a prostitute. The obstetrics and gynecology specialist is familiar with all medical conditions that can occur in pregnancy. Therefore, in this case, the specialist will assess the pregnancy and advise the woman on how to take care of the pregnancy. Further, the specialist will schedule hospital visits for the woman. Also, considering that the woman is a prostitute, the obstetrics and gynecology specialist will run all the necessary tests to diagnose any sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. He will thereafter manage any diagnosed STI and advise her accordingly on the importance of ensuring safe sex always and its effect on the baby. He can also ask the woman to bring along the boyfriend for health education on the use of condoms in protection against STIs (Stevens et al., 2015). Therefore, the obstetrics and gynecology specialist will ensure the well-being of the pregnant woman and the baby.
Another referral for the woman is to her psychiatrist, considering that she is addicted to alcohol and heroin. Psychiatrists play a central role in the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of drug addiction related complications. The psychiatrist will assess the patient and diagnose any drug addiction effects. He will then develop various medical interventions to help manage the woman’s dependence on alcohol and heroin. He will also counsel the woman on drug use and its effects on pregnancy and general well-being. He will participate in the patient’s drug addiction recovery plan to ensure excellent mental health (Pols et al., 2016).
