Theatre criticism

Theatre criticism involves a person responding to every aspect of the work in the stage, offering a definition of the meaning, and coming up with a critical judgment concerning a particular element presented on the stage. The audience plays a huge role in performance determination, the content that will be on the stage. Their role begins far at the beginning of making the content whereby any content created must have the audience’s thoughts. The audience is the consumers of the stage performance in theatres; therefore, it is impossible to ignore them. The audience thus becomes the critics.

The audiences are the critics because they are present in the theatrical performance. The theatre is a mode of communication, and communication requires active participation from the communicative participants. The participants are the audiences, the content, and the characters on the stage. The viewers are all critics because after observing the performance, they determine how the story is relatable to them if it was suitable. Also, they decide whether or not the performance was exceptional. The audiences also give their analysis of the characters on the stage. They determine how the various characters played their role, their effect on the story, and the general influence on their theatric experience. The audience also determines how the plot of the story affected their engagement in the whole act. Therefore, the audiences are not just mere consumers but also critics.

The social element is the first element. It focuses on the social significance of the story. The artistic element is the second element whereby the art’s quality and ability to bring out the ideas are focused on. Thetheatric element is the third one. It includes a critique of the directors, the lighting, the prop, and everything required to bring out the story. The element of human significance is the fourth one. The critic here focuses on the story’s relationship to the audience, its relevance, and its impact on the audience—the element of entertainment. The critics focus on whether the performance is engaging to the audience.

In conclusion, the audience is not only consumers of theatre, but they are also critics. Critics go beyond offering a simple opinion to going ahead to provide the basis for the evaluation of the judgment.
