Theoretical Perspectives for Propagating National Security Interests
Introduction
Nations have varied political, economic, and security interests. This necessitates the need to communicate foreign affairs effectively. Effective communication of foreign policies, including security interests, avoids adverse consequences that may arise in case of misunderstanding following poor communication of the interests. This essay analyses the national security strategy of the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump. American government uses realistic, liberal, identity perspectives to communicate their security interests to the world.
Theoretical Perspectives for Communicating Security Interests
According to Trump (December 2017), the world is becoming competitive, and nations are committed to gaining political, economic, and military influence across the globe. As Trump says, “Putting America first is the duty of our government (Trump, 2017, December).” This will be done by protecting the American way of life, the lives of Americans, and the homeland. This statement is based on the realism perspective of international relations because it reveals how the American government is committed to security affairs.
Further, Trump states that his government will insist on a fair and reciprocal economic relationship with other states to ensure they rejuvenate their economy (Trump (December 2017). This statement is based on the liberal perspective of international relations. The statement reveals the need for mutual benefits among the trading partners. This can be achieved by forming trading blocks and removing tariffs to ensure free mobility of production factors, including labor.
Again, the American national security strategy reveals that the nation is committed to advancing its influence on the rest of the world. A world that upholds American interests and reflects American values makes America secure (Trump (December 2017). This statement is based on an identity perspective. Based on the identity perspective, countries with different values consider each other as a threat. To explain this further, consider communist China and individualistic America. While china associates success with the community while in America, it is individuals who shine (Mazur & Li, 2016). Both countries have different identities and, consequently, never see eye to eye with one another.
Most Effective Theoretical Perspective
The liberal perspective of communicating the country’s security interests is the most effective. No country can produce all it requires to satisfy the needs and wants of its citizens. This necessitates the need for mutual relationships between countries (Nau, 2018). With free and fair economic terms, nations will be committed to safeguarding the security interest of their trading partners in a move to avoid financial crises in the event of a war erupting.
Conclusion
Theoretical perspectives, including identity, liberal, and realist for communicating security interests, are useful in avoiding dangerous consequences that might arise when countries fail to communicate their security interests effectively. The American national security strategy reveals that America uses these theoretical perspectives to create awareness of its security interests globally. By insisting on fair and mutual economic relationships, America shows its commitments ensuring its peoples are safe from external threats. Similarly, making security of its people, homeland, and way of life, America relies on a realist perspective to communicate its security interests. Identity perspective is based on preserving the nation’s identities. By advancing its influence globally, America hopes to ensure that the world reflects their values and, consequently, upholds America’s security. This action is made to preserve America’s values, which determines its identity. The current competitive world requires effective communication of security interests to avoid political conflicts and mass destruction.
