THEORIES IN THE NURSING FIELD
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Erickson’s Role Modelling Theory
These two theories carry the fundamentals of the health sector. Maslow’s theory is re-known for its focus on human needs, while Erickson’s philosophy focuses on personality development. Abraham Maslow argues that there are five levels to human needs, “…security, stability, self-actualization, self-esteem and love, (Jackson, 2014, p210).” These need to develop wholesome characters and ensure that great personalities find root in an individual. According to George, 2011, p520, “…There is also an art and Science part of it. The art aspects involves the individualized care based unit on the client’s inner world; the science aspect incorporates the use of the theoretical knowledge when planning care based on the patient’s needs.” The ultimate relationship between both theories; Health thrives on the existence of needs fulfilled and if the needs are not met, then the patient is under risk of external attacks on their health.
