They Say I Say book by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein explain the moves or rater the approach that matters in academic writing. The book has had a significant impact on the way writing is taught in the United States in more than 1000 universities. The book talks about the mystery of academic writing by explaining the easy steps of improving academic writing and making it easy. Gerald and Graff (27) say that writing is sometimes made harder than it is, academic writing is not all about grammar, spelling and organization, Academic writing entails a lot as discussed in the whole book. Proper academic writing entails a lot, and it should be simple enough to communicate the intended message through the use of various approaches interactively.
Academic writing follows the ‘I Say; They Say Model’ in this model, the academic writer first ought to understand what other people say about that topic. This includes researching about the topic and distinguishing it from other people’s point of view. After adequately understanding it from another perspective, the writer then comprehends the information and decides on their view; her the writer then interprets his information by writing based on what they think is best. In essence, the book says that good writing is multidimensional; one dimension looks at what the others say about that given topic while the other section talks about what the writer feels about the given topic. These are the man in fundamental principles of proper academic writing.
However, according to my position, Academic writing entails informing the audience and providing support and evidence. This means that at minimum, academic writing primarily involves personal position or rather saying what the writer understands from his personal views but reinforcing these views with evidence and arguments from other sources. Academic writing is first written in regard to the ideas or the stand that the writer holds, this stand is supported by sources and references that will allow the editors to expeditiously refer to the supporting materials that were used by the author to evaluate the paper’s position and conclusion (Bailey 17). Therefore, an academic paper must b relevant to the topic and ensures proper information to the audience. This means the audience is an essential consideration in academic writing. Opinion pieces are best suited for editorial work, not academic papers. Buy supporting the conclusion of the paper using various evidence, the writer embrace their overall credibility and ensure that the audience fairly and fully understands their points.
However, after writing the paper or the peace based on what the writer thinks as opposed to what other people say and supporting his or her work with proper sources and shreds of evidence, there comes other essential actions that will make the paper readable and understandable. One of the most important things is showing a little style; this requires the academic paper to embrace a particular style of writing from the many styles available. Besides, editing work is very important. When it comes to academic writing, editing is essential as it helps in formatting, condensing and clarifying material to ensure that the work is concise and persuasive. Finally, proofreading is important before submitting the final work; the author must examine the paper properly by looking for spelling and grammar mistakes to ensure their work is credible and cogent as possible.
In conclusion, academic writing, according to They Say, I Say involves writing in two phases; what they say and what the writer say. However, academic writing, according to my position, involves writing based on what the writer says bust supporting his or her ideas with resources and evidence. This is not enough; academic writing involves formatting, editing, proofreading, among other things.
