This career episode briefly explains the project which was done as a part of my bachelor of mechanical engineering.

Background

I was looking for a new development and invention which was never done before, so that period provided me a platform to use my engineering skills and invent some mechanical equipment which could help the society and that would be economical also. Since past many years, there have been many researches done in area of production of non-convention energy. Many were a huge success, others did not. So, I decided to develop such mechanical system or mechanism which could be useful to produce energy source. The project concept is about the production of energy from waste source, so I focussed on waste source to convert into power energy.
The silencer exhaust gases have huge amount of force that can be utilized for convent electric energy. The two wheeler or four wheeler vehicles are usually used in this country, so any mechanism fixed at silencer which produce power. The concept of my project was to produce power through two wheeler silencer.
Abstract:

The motive of the project was to develop such mechanism which can produce electric energy from waste source such as pressured gas exhaust from two wheeler vehicle. The internal combustion engine produce exhaust gas from engine escape system. if we provide some mechanical system such as blower which increase pressure of exhaust gas from vehicle then that force can be used to drive some useful application in order to produce electrical energy or power.
The concept of this project was that “use two wheeler silencer which provide pressurised air or gas and convert mechanical energy into electrical energy”. In order to produce electric power, there was used some fundamental mechanical and electric equipment such as air blower, silencer, dynamo propeller, DC generator, Rechargeable battery and bulb. All mechanical equipment have connect from one to another as shown in following circuit diagram.
As mention in circuit diagram, all equipment connected to each other. Start blower (P= 600w, blower are used for producing pressurized air for practical purpose, in case the system fixed with vehicle then blower not require) and performing experiment to produce power. The power produce by this system at turbine was 1.176X10-6 watts. The mechanical system satisfied two objective such as reduce pollution through utilization of waste air or gas exhaust from engine and produce electric power without consuming fossil fuel.

The objective of the project was to utilize pressurise exhaust gas or air release from internal combustion engine to produce electric power. The system was also useful because there were not used fossil fuel to operate this system. Another objective of this project was to develop system which use waste source in order to produce electric energy and reduce pollution.

My role was to prepare power generating system using two wheeler silencer.
I studied and research about different mechanical system which can used to generate electric power.
I studies about internal combustion engine in order to idea for exhaust system and that can be utilized for useful work.
I planned to analysis different equipment that can be fitted in our system, therefore I used different source in order to find equipment like internet, local automobile market where mechanical equipment easily and economically available.
I also took guidance from my senior, mentor and instructor about the project. So that I was regularly visit mechanical workshop and discuss about project and further planning.
I discussed with my project colleague to found equipment and prepare design.
I decided to take regularly visit to project guide and head of department to discuss about the project progress, further plan and activity for project.
Initially, I prepared circuit diagram of the system to understand complete project.
Further, I implemented that circuit diagram in physical manner in order to perform experiment.
At the time of experiment, I collected data as a result of this system.
Finally, I prepared project copy in Microsoft word.

The project based on fundamental of thermal power system and internal combustion engine. I had learn about the internal combustion engine, design of silencer, feature, purpose and working system of silencer in internal combustion engine. Apart from that there were other equipment also used for the project design such as blower, dynamo propeller, DC generator and rechargeable battery. Mechanical and electrical theoretical concept helps me design circuit of project. In order to joined equipment with base frame structure, I used to welding technology and to joint electrical component I used soldering process to connect wiring system of circuit. In order to produce electric energy from mechanical and electric equipment we aware about faraday principle in practical means. The project provide opportunity to used electric and mechanical source at same platform.

The project motive was to design mechanical system which used exhaust pressurised gas form two wheeler vehicle used to produce electric power. Different equipment used to prepare the design which convert mechanical energy into electric energy. Air blower worked as a source which provide pressurised air to system. DC generator have used to convent mechanical work into electric energy. The circuit design perform successfully and provide enough power output that feed to reachable battery. The rechargeable battery stored electric power for operate other equipment or can be used to operate other vehicle part also.

The project objective decided at the initial level of the project. At the study and research to different literature, I came to know that two and four wheeler vehicles are usually used in this country. So that ample amount of fossil fuel have used in daily life. There were many research done to produce renewable energy source and save or avoid to use fossil fuel. The motivation came at that time of study to produce renewable energy source.
So I decide to prepare mechanical design which can helps to reduce pollution done by vehicle and produce electric power also. Therefore the project aim was to design power generating system using two wheeler vehicle silencer. The circuit diagram have present as following.

The pressurised air exhaust from the vehicle engine, that pressurised air provide enough amount of force in order to operate dynamo propeller which couple to silencer system. The output shaft of dynamo couple to directly DC generator, DC generator convert mechanical energy into electrical power. Further DC generator couple to rechargeable battery to stored and consume power from generator. At the end of circuit bulb have fixed in order to check that circuit perform or not as per requirement. The silencer, air blower and other equipment joined to base frame in order to fixed assembly. A silencer have fixed through welding with structural steel base frame and other electric equipment such as generator, rechargeable battery and bulb joined through soldering process.
Proposed solution:

As completed entire project circuit, it require to check through experiment. The experiment output decide that project circuit was correct or not. That was the prototype of the design concept of energy produce through pressurised exhaust gas from silencer. The experiment output depends on the capacity of air blower fitted at the initial stage of circuit design. The air-blower capacity was 600w that was fixed for this project only. Different vehicle have different capacity. The pressurise air obtained from blower was 75 mph. The rotational speed of impeller was 16000 rpm for the project only, it can change as per requirement. The 12 volt rechargeable ac battery have used in circuit design. Volume of turbine was 0.183 m/s and power output obtain from turbine was 1.176X10-6 watts which was good for first attempt of project. The project result can improve or change as per requirement of power output. The power obtain from the system was not sufficient for operate engine of vehicle but the project was demonstrate about the possibility to produce power from waste source and reduce pollution also.
Result and analysis:

The project was successful to produce non-conventional source which was not consuming fossil fuel. The pressurised air used to produce electric power in order to operate bulb attached at the end of circuit. Clear result obtained through correct match of theoretical concept and practical result. Any mechanical design require to satisfied two primary concept that was theoretical aspect of circuit design and experiment result of project circuit. The theoretical solution have made from numerical calculation and used basic principal as well as relent formula about the circuit. The mathematical calculation like to calculate swept area of turbine, velocity of turbine, power output form turbine was the essential result from theoretical design point of view. Therefore we calculate that quantity and obtain result in order to compare result with experiment result.
At last, it was experimental performance of circuit and notice result of turbine output, rechargeable battery obtain voltage and bulb illumination intensity. We were performing experiment three to five time in order to obtain accurate result and match with theoretical result. It was obvious that both result was not perfect match but match at certain extend. Because in theoretical calculation, we were neglecting human error and surrounding error affect to result of experiment.
Technical challenges and difficulties:

The research about new concept was always difficult at the initial level of project. The challenges for the project was limited time period and fixed budget for project.
Which equipment should use for this project was challenging at certain level that require detail research and literature studies. Collect equipment from market also difficult task for the project.
No experience for welding process and soldering process in order to joined silencer and other equipment with base frame.
Base frame design suitability was difficulties for this project. No idea about how to fixed equipment with base frame.
Difficult to obtain result at first attempt.
No idea about selection of equipment as per specification, need to study lot for match specification as per project requirement.
Air-blower pressure control difficult at the time of performance of experiment, the pressure intensity affect to other temporary joint. In order to overcome that issue, the blower speed maintain at moderate speed and use trial and error method to obtain correct speed.
Summary and conclusion:

The mechanical system was design in order to reduce emissions from the vehicle and engine exhaust flow used to produce energy. The developed system have advantages likes reduce pollution from exhaust of the vehicle engine and produce power without utilization of fossil fuel such as petrol, diesel or gas. The power output from the engine exhaust system enough to produce electric energy or power.
The project beauty about to use waste in order to produce electric energy. Apart from that all mechanical equipment used for developing this system was easily available and complete system is economic, so it can be used as source of energy and can implement to practice life.
If we consider this model used in future vehicle and assemble at exhaust system of two wheeler vehicle then it control pollution and noticeable reduce fuel from the engine. The project was demonstration about how to use waste source in order to convert useful energy source but if it acceptable in real life situation then that was the best application in automobile sector.
