Timex Unisex Weekender 38mm Watch
Introduction
Watch overview
The Timex Unisex Weekender will probably be the first result you will get when you google ‘best cheap watches’. This is an excellent option if your job is predominantly outside and need a reliable way to tell the time.
While the Weekender is cheap, it is long-lasting. I have had it for almost two years through harsh conditions such as extreme temperatures, accidentally dropping it from a moving car, etc.
Fortunately, you can pair it with any casual dress. For example, during the summertime, you can wear it with a floral sleeved shirt and shorts. Alternatively, you can go the smart-casual way and match it with a button-up shirt, denim trousers, and blazer. Either way, this is an all-round watch that will add a touch of style to your casual look.
About the company
The Timex brand dates back in 1854 when it was founded as the Waterbury Watch Company by the Brass manufacturer Benedict and Burnham. The company was formally incorporated in 1857 and became one of the largest watch producers for both the local and export markets.
At that time, the company focused on making standard clocks and later shifted to pocket watches that became very popular. The biggest breakthrough was the Ingersoll Yankee pocket watch that sold over six million units. Timex took advantage of its pocket watches popularity to introduce a few modifications. For example, it moved the crown from 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock and added straps to produce a wristwatch. This watch was in high demand during World War I because it was convenient and easier to use in the battle than the pocket watch.
Since then, the Timex brand has continued to produce simplistic innovative timepieces for everyone at affordable prices.
The dial
One of the most appealing features of the Weekender is the dial. The creamy beige dial is uncluttered with only the hour markers, the Timex logo, and the word Indiglo. The shatter-resistant mineral glass crystal protects it, though it is prone to scratches.
The dial has large black hour numerals for easier readability. There is also a smaller military time display under the hour indices if you like to read the time in 24-hours notation.
The Timex Weekender has an Indiglo backlight that evenly illuminates the entire watch face. This makes it easy to read the time in the dark.
Hands
The hour and minute hands are black and contrast well with the off-white dial, making it highly legible. Both hands have sharp edges and appear to point directly at the respective markers.
The second hand is well defined, and you will see it as it ticks to track it. Since it is a quartz watch, the hand ticks once per second. Fortunately, the second hand is long, touching the minute markers.
Hour/minute markers
The hour markers are large black Arabic numerals that contrast against a cream background for readability. On the other hand, the minute markers are dashes with 5-minute increments to enable you to read the exact time.
Movement and accuracy
The Timex Weekender has a quartz movement, which is generally more accurate compared to the mechanical movement. You will only need to adjust just a few minutes once or twice a year.
The only issue with the quartz movement is that you will have to bear with the second hands classic tick-tock sounds. Also, it is battery powered, which means you will have to change it every few years.
