To the Ohio Association of Community College,
The dream to achieve the very best is always everyone’s desire. This can only be achieved through the living and accomplishing your purpose. Nursing has been a life-time vision and dream that my heart has always yearned. I remember when I was in my elementary school, and one of our English teachers asked us in class what we would want to be when we grow up. I was one of the confident students who hurriedly raised their hands, as I spoke of becoming a nurse. I loved the caring heart of nurses and felt deep within me, that God had purposed me to serve my people in this area. Since then, from my childhood days, my classmates and my family have always known it and nicknamed me some of the funny names of the school nurses. I am ever happy about it as I believe it is coming true, through this opportunity with the Ohio Association of Community College.
I have always stayed with my grandparents in most of my childhood ages. This has given me an opportunity to express my dream, although not yet approved professionally. My grandfather is diabetic, and I vividly remember when he got injured while on his normal home duties. This wound took long to heal for almost one year. I used to sit with him as he cleaned the wound, and most of the time, he would call me out to clean it, as he would tell me how to do it. I loved to do it, and most of the time, I would remind him, when he forgot to do it. This was a learning session, that kept me strong and committed with confidence to monitor his wound and accompany him to the clinic for check-ups.
I have also participated in community health activities such as the fight against HIV/AIDs. I have been an agent of advocating abstinence among the youth. I have also participated in peer counselling forums among my fellow youths, especially those with personality and eating disorders. I was granted this opportunity because I have worked in health awareness programs in my school before. I was the health club chairman and worked with the school nurse. Throughout, the four years in high school, serving in that desk and coordinating many activities with the school hospital team, I was exposed to more healthcare ideas and concepts. I loved to be a nurse, even interacting with doctors and pharmacists. I liked the way nurses were always there for us, ready to serve and help when an issue arose. They were friendly to interact with and did their work optimally with no supervision. Everyone loved them because of their empathetic nature, and the resilience even during worse conditions. I spent most of the time with them to learn and equip myself with nursing knowledge.
Given a chance in Ohio Community College, and pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, I promise to serve the community. I am oriented to see change and impact society. I have had the opportunity to participate in teaching the community on safety measures during this global pandemic. I have volunteered in this work, to ensure people understand the advantages of prevention over cure, especially in this unknown era of the disease. I will also want to fill the gap of shortage in nurses, which has significantly influenced the healthcare system. This has been witnessed especially during this pandemic period when one nurse has to take care of more than three patients, and this has increased their risks of exposure to the coronavirus. Therefore, I believe having the required skills I will be able to serve more patients and reduce nursing burn out. Besides, I am also willing to start more programs to help those students who excel highly in their academics and have a dream of nursing, and sometimes fail to accomplish it, because of lack of finances. This has affected many students who come from poor backgrounds. Linking with the government and the community, to offer nursing and healthcare programs more than it has been, will save the community and also help these students accomplish their purpose in life.
I also have the desire to further my studies after two years of clinical experience and acquire more knowledge in healthcare, especially in dealing with chronic diseases. One of the significant underlines causes of chronic diseases is obesity. Having known this, its high time to start educating people on healthy living like eating appropriate food and do physical exercise and practice regular check-ups of the common diseases. Saving our young children from obesity helps to reduce obesity cases and other complications in the future. I am also willing to help young people to change their lives by learning new skills and new attitudes and behaviors. This will be among the drug addicts. Drug addiction is one of the primary healthcare problems in Ohio. Having realized that many people are suffering from drug addiction, getting professional knowledge will help me deal with this behavior. Drugs ruin the health status of an individual and increase the risk of them acquiring diseases. Thus, enlightening them on the effects of drugs at an individual level may help reduce the usage of drugs among our youth.
In conclusion, I am ready to serve the community with humility, commitment, determination, passion, integrity, resilience and empathy. I believe in making the change to the health care systems and even at the individual level. This is all possible through the knowledge I will gain when granted an opportunity to learn at Ohio Community College. I am self-driven and ready to learn new concepts and use them in practical ways, especially in my field of Nursing. I will be grateful if given the opportunity, and I promise to accomplish all the stated above is considered.
