Topic: Use of standard units,Mass, Time, Length, and Money
It is a well-known fact that all objects are associated with some sought of physical properties that involve length, mass, time, temperature and pressure, etc. In practice, units of measurement are the standard units that are also referred to as a unit. The units can be measured in-
- Length meter, foot, inch, kilometre
- Mass can be measured in gram, kilogram, and pound
- Time can be measured in three units namely seconds, minutes, and hours
- Temperature can be measured with the units of Celsius, Fahrenheit, and kelvin
Likewise, the units of measurement deal with CGS, MKS, and FPS
CGS: Centimetre, gram, and second
KMS: Kilogram, Meter, and second
FPS: Foot, pound, and second
Units of measurement of length
The standard units of length of “meter” which can be abbreviated as “m”. We can inter-convert the length units. Given below are the units of lengths-
1 foot (ft) | 12 inches (in) |
1 yard (yd) | 3 feet (ft) |
1 yard (yd) | 36 inches (in) |
1 mile (mi) | 1,760 yards (yd) |
1 mile (mi) | 5280 feet (ft) |
1 meter (m) | 100 centimetres (cm) |
1 Kilometre (Km) | 1000 meters |
1 meter (m) | 10 decimetres (dm) |
With the use of unit conversions, we can convert units to length into other units ____
For example, let’s suppose if we want to calculate how many inches is a man tall as compared to the 6 feet tall man.
As we know that 1 foot always equal to 12 inches
Convert 6 feet into inches by multiplying 6 with 12 inches—
6 X 12 = 72 inches
Quiz:
Question 1>. While driving, Elija sees a sign that says 123 kilometres to a diner. How many more meters is it to the diner?
- 123000 meters
- 1230000 meters
- 123456 meters
- 1234500 meters
Answer: A; 1 Kilometre equals to 1000 meters which means—
1 Kilometres equals to 1000 meters
123 Kilometres equals to 123 X 1000 meters = 123000 meters
Question 2>. If Siri has walked 13 meters towards his destination, measuring a total of 47 meters, how many centimetres does he need to travel more?
- 2500 meters
- 3400 meters
- 6543 meters
- 9876 meters
Answer: B; 3400 centimetresis the answer because the total distance is 47 out of which 13 meters has been covered by Siri, and he left with 34 meters.
1 meter = 100 centimetres
34 meters = 34 X 100 =3400 centimetres
Question 3>If Suzan has already measured 17 inches of a table, but in actual, the table is 30 inches. How many inches does she need to measure more?
- 13
- 12
- 15
- 14
Answer: A; It has been mentioned in the question that Suzan measured a table 17 inches.
The total length of the table is 30 inches.
Suzan left with 30- 17 = 13 inches
Question 4>Adam grows 20 centimetresevery year, but presently he is now 1.6m tall. How tall was he 2 years ago?
- 150 cm
- 120 cm
- 160 cm
- 170 cm
Answer. B; Presently, Adam’s age is 1.6m
Convert 1.6m into centimeters, it is 1.6m = (16/10) X100 cm= 160 cm
Every 1 year it grew 20 cm, then 2 years ago his age was 160-20-20= 120 cm
Question 5>Susie wants to surround her rectangular garden with the fencing. The length of the rectangular garden is 270 cm while breadth is 130 cm. How many meters of fencing will she need?
- 8
- 9
- 10
- 11
Answer: A; To fence the rectangular garden, we need to evaluate the perimeter of the rectangle that is 2 X (Length +Breath)
Length: 270 cm
Breath: 130 cm
Perimeter of Rectangle: 2 X (L + B)
2 X (270 + 130) à 2 X (400) à 800 cm
1 m= 100 cm therefore, 800cm equals to 8 meters
This implies that Susie need 8 meters of wire to fence the rectangular garden
Question 6>. Alesca is building a wind chime. For the formation of the wind chime, she needs a string of the following lengths: six pieces of 20cm, 3 pieces of 30 cm, and one piece of 40 cm. How much string does she need in meters?
- 3m
- 4m
- 5m
- 6m
Answer:C;To build a wind chime Alesca need sic pieces of string of length 20cm which means total thread that she needs is 20×6= 120 cm
Similarly, 3 pieces of 30 cm means 3X 30= 90cm
1 piece of 40 cm means= 1 X 40 = 40 =cm
120 + 90 + 40 = 250 cm
250/100 m = 2.5m
Question 7>. Hugo begins a new program in which he started walking 400m on the very first day of the program. It has been analysed that each day he will increase his walking distance by 200m. How many kilometres will he walk on 18 days of his program?
- 4 km
- 5 km
- 8 km
- 6 km
Answer: A;Initially, it has been mentioned that Hugo covered 600m of distance and each day he increased his walking distance.
200m increased in each day and total days are 18 which means
18 X 200 = 3600m
Even, 600 he had covered in the first day the total distance that he needs to travel during the program will be 3600+ 400= 4000m
1000m =1 kilometers
4000m = 4 kilometers
Question 8>Riana is stringing beads to make a beautiful necklace. She is using 30 of the 8 mm beads, 70 of the 4mm beads, 40 of the 2mm beads. How long will be the necklace that she made?
- 50 cm
- 40 cm
- 80 cm
- 60 cm
Answer: D; 30 (8) + 70 (4) + 40 (2) = 600mm
It is well known that 1mm = 0.1 cm
600mm = 0.1 X 600cm = 60cm

- 93 foot
- 93 foot
- 93 foot
- 9545.93 foot
Answer: Hint it has been provided in the question in which it has been particularly mentioned that 2.3 Km is equal to 2300m.
0.3048metres = 1 foot
2300 m = 1/0.3048 x 2300 foot = 7545.93 Foot
Question 10> James is training for 50-meter dash. Each day that he trains, he runs the dash six times. Additionally, he trained for four days. This week, he trained for five days. In two weeks, how far has James run?
- 7 km
- 5 km
- 7 km
- 8 km
Answer: A; He runs the dash six times (50m X 6) = 300 m
He trained 4 days= 4 X 300 = 1200m
In a week, he has trained 5 days= 5 X 300= 1500m
In two weeks, he had run 1200 + 1500 = 2700m= 2.7Km
