PROBLEM IN PORT SAVANNA
In 2015, port savannah had the ambition to deepen its harbor for it to accommodate the ever bigger “mega vessels,” that will help it carry an increasing number of containers. Since the shipping of the container has increased, it has led to transparency reduction. With security for the TEUs at their point of origin out of the hands of the receiving port. Nine out of 11 showed the terrorist potential of using planes as weapons, and ominously, there was an attempt of a stowaway named Rizak Amid Farid, who attempted to travel to Canada in a container with a bed. There was an attack in the Israel Port of Ashod by two Palestinian suicide bombers who slipped in by hiding in a cargo container.
In 2006, the report was released by the RAND Corporation, explaining the worst case of scenario, where the nuclear device was sent to the port of Long Beach by the shipping container. If it exploded, the port would have been destroyed, also including the nearby port of Los Angeles, and it would also cause the death of more than 60,000 people, with other millions injured (Chatterjee, 2003).
Recommendation to curb the problem
When dealing with the security in ports, the stakes are not only high, but they are increasingly widespread because the sea and the land are linked with the container. The security measure to be improved to curb the above problems, securing the global supply chain must begin at the ports of origin overseas, where the monitoring of containers must be done via land transit, and also loading and the storage areas. The containers that have not yet been put into ships must be surveyed by videos, which are highly sophisticated systems with facial recognition software and behavior.
The containers used must be made in such a way that they are “smart” able that can detect the probability of destructive materials, real-time information relay on temperature and location, and also attempt to open it.
On top of that, those cargoes that are of high risk should be identified, tracked, and thoroughly screened before it reaches the shores of the USA. For that reason, the government of the USA and port shareholders to hugely give a hand of support to the foreign partners to help them strengthen their security, this will be a significant step in improving the global supply chain safety.
