Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill

According to Stuart, many people lack a proper understanding of utilitarianism. They interpret utility as in antagonism to pleasure. Many delusions about utilitarianism forced Mills to demarcate the theory to give more understanding. He describes it as a theory built on the principle that right actions tend to promote happiness, and wrong ones eventually yield the reverse of happiness—pleasure, and freedom from pain defined as utility or the highest happiness principle. The two components of service remain only things desirable as ends. Actions termed terrible when they lead to a decrease in the level of general happiness, and the right to improve standards of satisfaction. In modern philosophy, utilitarianism remains a vital theory.

Pleasures defined as low and high-quality pleasures. Typically, people prefer the comfort that plea to their higher capabilities. Confusion between happiness and contentment is yet another misconception about utilitarianism. Those who employ higher faculties tend to be always less content and vice versa. However, compared to a corrupt human, their pleasure tends to have a loftier character. Utilitarian standard desires possession of a noble character. Mills states that people to best judge pleasure quality, are those that have experienced both lower and higher pleasures. Critics have emerged, claiming that the theory tries to relate fundamentally incommensurable things. It is achieved by computing, artificially, the amount of utility they convey.

In conclusion, there is importance in considering if Mills satisfactorily provides answers to criticisms around incommensurable pleasures. Many areas still need more explanations and analysis to bring out a concise and unbiased solution. People need in-depth knowledge of what makes some pleasures higher and lower to others, respectively. The utility is supposed to be an initial measurement. Detailed analysis of the effects of pleasure and pain to morals needs provision. From the essay, people get knowledge on differentiating the utilitarianism from other misconceptions. It helps spot the difference between happiness and contentment. People need to be educated more on utilitarian theory and its effects on life.
