The nurturing aspect of leadership is generally manifested through establishing individual ethics and morals that define the decision making power of any successful leader. Ethical behavioral practice entails acting in a manner that the society interprets as ethical and also acting as an independent personal system. This implies that every leader’s qualification is deemed by his surroundings and the impact he or she impounds through his actions and sense of direction or motivation. The society is designed to uphold such individuals reflecting such virtues and values.
Value pluralism that relatively resonates with ethical pluralism is moral theories that suggest how all values are equally as correct and fundamental. Furthermore, they deal with the multiple theories of what is right or wrong and how incompatible they may be with our normal personal morals. Craig E. Johnson has progressively laid down the blueprint of establishing ethics in administration, which has been a major challenge to face in leadership. For instance, the books describe a variety of moral frameworks, such as utilitarianism. Following philosopher John Stuart’s interpretation on the same, utilitarianism was based on the argument that ethical choices should be more inclined to focus on their results. Relatively, the highest number of individuals attempt this specific framework.
Besides, the utilitarianism framework had a positive impact on shaping my leadership skills. I was able to draw a discipline mechanism from its clarity, understandability, and frequency in the application, as well as involving critical thinking in making decisions. In my encounter on losing a close relative, I was able to redirect my priorities, and my life choices focused more on the possible outcomes expected. Therefore, the uncertainty of results requires us as leaders to be careful and proactive in maintaining ethical norms and values to bridge the level of success and satisfaction in administration.
However, this specific framework had weaknesses that would require more clarity to improve my outcome. For instance, identifying the consequences is somewhat a challenge considering that outcomes generally appear to be in contrast with one’s target expectations; hence a variety of conclusions met. Leadership success, therefore, requires meeting and dealing with such ethical challenges in the most appropriate way. Relative to Immanuel Kant’s discussions, I would recommend that every leader should boldly engage in ethical decisions regardless of any results or repercussions in the future. Believing in one’s conscience should be the focal point, and whenever a feeling of guilt or bad instinct builds in, it does imply that a wrong choice has been made.
In conclusion, the utilitarianism framework states that an individual is expected to make ethical decisions having in mind that what is right and valuable for one person becomes right for all. Therefore, ethics is at the center of leadership that recommends the implementation of the 4-V model of ethical leadership, including a leader’s core values, vision framework, voice, and virtues. Practicing the various framework models requires leaders to make every effort to practice ethical decisions, fostering, and developing positive ethical behaviors among followers.
