Week 3 discussion
- Answer each question in List A.
- I belong to The American Psychological Association’s professional society.
- I left the previous employers because he lacked trust in me and denied me independence. For instance, he often micromanaged me and mostly questioned my decisions. Furthermore, he demanded that I consult him before performing any task. Therefore, I felt that the environment was inconducive for me to thrive and decided to leave.
- I like working with resourceful people because they can provide a solution for almost every challenge we encounter. Furthermore, I enjoy working with visionary people because they think in decades instead of weeks or days and have a clear vision of what they want to do with their lives. I also enjoy working with doers because they do not just say they will do something, but they take action to accomplish the task they have promised to perform. Lastly, I like working with people of complete integrity since I know they have honest intentions for themselves, firm, and colleagues (Noe et al. 45).
- In five years, I want to establish an organization that gives psychological support to individuals who have encountered traumatizing experiences such as rape and domestic violence. I also have a vision of starting a children center for orphans or those experiencing violence at home.
- Legally protected E.E.O
- Given that you are a wheelchair user, how do you think you will be able to do this work? – The protected group is people with disabilities. The question discriminates people with disabilities because it refers to a person’s use of a wheelchair to assess his/her ability to work. The people with disabilities are protected against discrimination to prevent situations where they are denied employment opportunities due to their disability, even when they are the best candidates.
- What church do you attend? – religion- the discrimination is directed towards religion since if the interviewee subscribes to a different faith from that of interviewers, he may lose the chance. The category is protected to avoid situations where firms only hire people from a specific religion.
- Are there any religious holidays on which you can’t be available to work? -Religion- mentioning the religious holidays will show an interviewee’s religion, and this may be used to deny him the employment opportunity.
- Are you a citizen of the USA? – race- The question has some aspect of racism because demanding to know one’s citizenship suggests that the interviewer thinks the interviewee is a foreigner. The category is protected to prevent racism in workplaces.
- Do you have any physical limitations? – people with disability- the phrase “physical limitations” is kind words for disability. People with disabilities are protected because they are more vulnerable to employment discrimination. Employers think that people with disabilities will waste time before shifting from one activity to another, or consider them incompetent.
- A discriminatory question in job interview
- In one of the job interviews that I have attended, the interviewer asked how weird I am (Noe et al. 62). I wondered where the question was a precautional measure to the company against facing charges for hiring ineligible people such as mentally challenged individuals. On the other hand, I felt that the interviewer mistook me for a criminal because I am a black- American.
