Additionally, jazz helps communities treasure and value their traditions, culture, and heritage. Through such aspects, jazz today connects with the more 100-year-old jazz tradition.

There are several ways that jazz relates to today’s social and cultural experiences. Jazz is a style of music that helps celebrate and preserve tradition. A List of Three Musical Examples Related To the Chapters for the Week Including Links to YouTube

The three music examples are from the same time of American history. American history represents a time when changes were occurring socially, politically, and economically. The colonial period is part of American history since this is the period whereby government policies were enforced and freedom was gradually realized. As such, the three all represent the process of freedom despite having different messages. The first song by Sarah Vaughan ‘Make Yourself Comfortable’ was recorded in the year 1956. As the title suggests, the author was advising her audience to choose comfortability. The song was released during a time when the US had just freed itself from colonialists and was setting up the required framework to initiate the necessary policies of self-governance. The second song by Johnny Cash called ‘Orange Blossom Special’ is considered one of the most inspiring songs in the US. In American history, the song inspired the people to excel despite the hardships. The third song by Billie Holiday titled ‘Swing, brother, swing’ is a jazz song fighting for the rights of African Americans. Slavery was a huge part of American history hence why the song is important in the US. All in all, the songs were released at different times but considered an integral part the American history.

The first song by Sarah Vaughan ‘Make Yourself Comfortable’ is blue’s music genre. As a pianist, Sarah was known for her inventiveness in writing songs that influenced society. The song features several instruments like trumpets, pianos, and drums. The song had the message of hope and positivity for all Americans hence its relation to the chapters.  The second song ‘Orange Blossom Special’ by Johnny Cash is part of the country music genre. Country music celebrates culture especially in America hence its significance. The message in the chapters is the importance of music in society for instance bringing harmony and peace. Similarly, Johnny’s song impelled the US to blossom economically, politically, and socially. The third song by Billie Holiday ‘Swing, brother, swing’ is a jazz song and relates to the chapter through advocating for human rights. For a long time, African Americans were subjected to racial prejudice hence why the song encourages people of color to keep fighting.
