What are the roles of the Chief Diversity Officer?
In a hospital with diverse health care providers, difficulties of seeing the doctor are reduced. With diversity, the special needs of different patients can be addressed, for example, the health care needs of a transgender client. Additionally, diversity and inclusion also help in enhancing the quality of health care services patients receive in hospitals. In the healthcare system, when doctors and other service providers are from different cultural backgrounds, they share the different perceptions of a similar situation. With such knowledge, health care providers from a different culture can better understand the pressing needs of the patient and eventually provide better care for them. Lastly, diversity and inclusion in the healthcare system help the client have fewer worries in sharing their issues. In a hospital where there is no diversity, some patient fails to seek medical services when they are sick. The patient’s for they are likely to be intimidated because of their health concern.
Chief Diversity Officer plays the role of creating an inclusive environment for both staff members and also learners in schools through enrolment efforts of individuals from diverse cultures and organizing training sessions that promote diversity. Chief Diversity Officer also ensures that every employee and learner is comfortable in their place of working and learning institutions, respectively, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, among other factors.
If you were a Chief Diversity Officer at the hospital, what are your possible strategies to improve diversity and inclusion at your workplace?
As a Chief Diversity Officer at the hospital, I would adopt a number of strategies to improve diversity and inclusiveness. First, I would measure the level of diversity in the hospital. Secondly, in the process of recruiting new members of staff, I would also allow candidates from different geographical regions to apply for the jobs advertised. I would also work on organizational culture to ensure that it promotes diversity and inclusiveness in order to be n apposition to retain the hired member of staff with fewer turnovers. Lastly, I would organize training on the need to appreciate inclusiveness and diversity.
