What is Anna Q. trying to persuade you into believing?
The author, while alluding to religion and Christianity in particular, is trying to put across the fact that rhetorical appeals guide every communication. Such appeals are meant to enhance the process of communication to evoke different effects in the communication process. The author does so in a religious context, her arguments revolving on accounts and the descriptions of events in the church of the Holy Apostles in New York.
How does she do that?
Anna does this by citing and describing different scenarios within the same religious setting to demonstrate that a similar setting can be manipulated by the rhetorical appeals to bring out communication effects. She brings about Pathos by citing and explaining on the philanthropy by the church in how they take part in feeding the hungry population, thus bringing out emotional attachment aspect; a key aspect in Pathos. Logos which is a concept of logic and causal explanations phenomena surfaces when the author explains the causal reasons why politics are often termed as lousy. The appeal to authority, reputation and character if brought out by the ethos, is seen Jilly Stephens, the director of City Harvest delegating duties to his workers on how to increase their food security.
Give me at least two quotes from the text (for each of the following) to show me how she uses
Ethos
“Hunger is hard for us as a nation to admit,” says Clyde Kuemmerle, the overseer in the food distribution program. The acknowledgement that these were the direct utterances by an overseer brings about the appeal to authority and reputation in speech; a key aspect in ethos. It goes a long way in influencing how the speech will be perceived by the audiences an overseer being a highly reputable individual in this context and authority as well.
The same case is seen when the director of the City Harvest says “Half as many pantry bags” while directing his subjects. His speech will be taken in a serious proportion bearing in mind that he is in apposition of authority.
Pathos
In one of his sermons, Rev, William; the Rector says “we call these people our guests”; in so doing, he is trying to elicit the right emotion buy freeing to everybody as a guest to show the religious kind and emotional gesture.
The rector then continues and says “they are the children of God”, this is meant to create emotional catharsis on the target audiences. By referring to the congregation as children, the rector is trying to bring out the aspect of innocence in them the profound effect on the audience being emotional appeal. All this is done in reference to God, who is the Supreme Being guiding the ways of men.
Logos
Clyde Kuemmerle says “Hunger is hard for us to admit” then goes ahead and adds that “That makes it hard to talk about and impossible to run on”. In these quotations, the author is trying to bring out the logical explanations on the inevitability of hunger; thus, the more reason for preparedness in issuing emergency food services.
