Here are some general tips in communicating with people from different cultures. But always remember not to stereotype people because of their particular culture, as individual differences exist within any group: 1. Multicultural misunderstandings do sometimes occur. When this happens try to empathize with the other person – put yourself in their shoes. Take the time to understand where they are coming from. 2. Look at the situation objectively, without making hasty judgments or assumptions that the other person is wrong or not cooperating. Be flexible.

3. When conversing, use common words and avoid using slang. You may need to repeat the basic idea you are trying to convey, but don’t shout. 4. Respond to what a person is actually doing or saying, instead of what you assume their motives to be. 5. Don’t be distracted by voice tone, style, accent, grammar or personal appearance; listen and comprehend based on the merits of what the person is saying or doing. 6. Consciously seek out new multicultural relationships and challenges. This sharpens your multicultural communication skills and helps you to more confidently interact with people from different cultures.
