What problem will earning your degree solve?
Earning my degree will enable me to help individuals gain healthy problem solving skills and positive coping mechanisms. Through earning my psychology degree, I will help people manage anxieties and stress and other mental health problems such that they can live fulfilling lives. My degree will help individuals with mental disorders such as bipolar disorder to identify them, accept them and find positive ways of living with their disorders.
Brainstorm 3 things you can do today to start to prepare yourself for your future goals.
Getting a mentor in a professional psychologist that will assist me in learning the skills and characteristics needed. Some of these are compassion, relationship building and creativity. For example, learning how art therapy can greatly impact teaching people how to overcome, for example, post traumatic disorder and a variety of mental illnesses among other complex issues. Also, it helps create a conducive and therapeutic environment for the individual.
Volunteering or working at a rehabilitation center that works in substance abuse is another great way of getting prepared. Working with people recovering from substance addiction will give me a real-life account of how they got involved with substance abuse and help them unlearn negative behavior. Through psychology, I can assist them to develop positive and healthier coping skills.
Another way is working at a group home which is where disadvantaged and disabled teens live together and learn life skills. These life skills include cooking, cleaning, gardening, taking part in community events and how to develop job skills. Group homes provide a structured, therapeutic environment in which teens receive assistance in making emotional and behavioral changes.
