1. Explain the purpose for protecting geographical location as a form of IP protection. (5 marks)
|
A geographical location is a form of IP protection used as an indication sign used to protect products with specific qualities and geographical origins. The location identifies a product as originating from a particular place. The geographical location identifies the reputation of products as originating from the place of origin. Because the qualities of the products depend on the location as a point of production, protection of the geographical location acts as a clear link between the product and the location where the product is manufactured. In Canada, for instance, every industry produces its original products, and the place where the firm is situated acts as the geographical location and appellation of origin. Therefore, geographical location is an everyday requirement for a business to leverage its investment. Moreover, the geographical location informs and attracts consumers because it enables a firm to show its value to the consumers.
