Participation in Art

Participation is the most fundamental among all the basic art distinctions because it is the only way through which art can become interactive. Participation and behavior of the audience are what makes a work of art interactive, and may make it change the meaning. For an art to be interactive, artists base the work on audience participation while also going past how the artwork will sound like or look to an observer. The way through which the audience interacts with art is a very important aspect of its essence, and this can only be achieved by making participatory the most fundamental distinction of art. The heart of art is more on its behavior or interaction than in any other element.

For an art to be considered interactive, it is the participation level, and the behavioral response of the audience is what matters most. Engaging the audience is far beyond how they look at the art. It needs to include how they react or interact with the art, and considerations on whether the piece will have a positive or negative impact. Artists do not produce pieces of work that are appealing to only themselves. Every piece of art has a meaning and an objective that it is set to achieve through passing a particular message. Getting the message across to the audience and achieving the goals requires participation to be integral in developing the art. Participation enables artists to gauge their performance by understanding the responses and interactions of the audience with the work. The performance of art is related to sounds, gestures, or other audience behavior features.

The transformable reliefs by Yaakov Akam are a great example of a piece of art entirely based on participation. He created works of art that could be viewed as play objects that had to be touched or stroked in a specific manner, to interact with the audience as intended. His main interest was to welcome the public into his work. This would enable him to understand the taste of the audience and change or create his works based on their feelings. The transformable art was centered at achieving maximum audience participation as the basic distinction of art creativity
