What Do the Media Do to Us?
The article begins by explaining to us that the world is seeing tremendous changes. There are concerns about global warming, air pollution, and other social issues. However, the greatest concern is the inequality around the globe. The disparity is based on three main factors that include race, gender and class. The chapter further expounds on the dangers arising from such inequalities. The author then shifts to provide a brief description of the media and its role in society. Media is an integral part of a community. It plays a vital role in the spread of information and the control of the mass media. As a result, it is critical in the survival of society.
The main point of the chapter is that the media influences our daily activities in major ways. It has a direct influence on what we consume and what we choose not to consume. For instance, advertisements and media endorsements lead to the consumption of products that are not needed by the consumer. The media shapes our understanding of the society as it directs our opinion to what it presents to the audience at times without consideration of facts.
I believe that the media influences our opinion of societal views. Today what is viewed as right or wrong does not necessarily have an attached cultural or social value. As such, media controls what we consume, what we perceive and the general opinion of daily political, financial and economic issues, However, the media is also crucial in providing information to the general public and is an essential communication media. Media remains a vital part of the society as it provides guidance to follow and the views that direct society.
